Breakthrough pain is pain that ‘breaks through’ the strong opioid medication given to alleviate it. Breakthrough pain is treated with faster acting narcotic medication that, in addition to pain relief, may cause cognitive confusion. The bedside flowers become a fixation and morph in and out of focus and conscious reality.
In quieter moments when treating these patients, they sometimes share their experiences.
“Did I ever really see colour?”
“It’s getting harder now…”
“Oh…my demons are visiting again…”
So many call for their mother, and that can be very hard to hear, over and over.
